Of this gospel I was made a minister according to the gift of God’s grace, which was given me by the working of his power. To me, though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, and to bring to light for everyone what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things, so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places.
(Ephesians 3:7-10 ESV)
Yesterday we read that all people are invited into the eternal family (called the church in today’s verse) that God is creating and that all Christians should make this known to everyone. The reason we should do this is so that God’s wisdom would be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places.
I think this is one of the coolest things about the human existence – that by watching our lives and the way that God deals with us, the angels are learning about God. Our lives teach the angels.
The word “manifold” means “many and various”. God’s wisdom is complicated. When something is complicated it can be hard to explain. Sometimes a visual example helps to make such a concept clearer. That is exactly what the church (God’s family) is. We are a visual teaching lesson to the invisible angels that surround us.
There is much more to our lives than we realize. Many Christians believe that the goal of life is to get saved and then grow to be more like Christ. While God certainly wants this for us, our lives are designed to be so much more. Our lives illustrate the glory of God to all the creatures in heaven.
The angels – both good and bad – are watching us. The fallen angels realize their mistake of rejecting God when they see Him pour out His love on us as He did when He sent Jesus to the cross. As a result of these angels’ realization of the truth, God is glorified. God is glorified – esteemed – wherever there is truth.
The loyal angels give God glory by their very loyalty to Him. But they give Him even more glory when they learn something about Him that they did not know before.
When the angels see God accomplish His purpose by using people who are selfish, arrogant, lazy, greedy, addicted, murderers, schemers, and all sorts of other undesirable things they learn. When they see God love these very same people they are astonished.
All of human history is an on-going drama. Earth is the stage. The angels are the audience. People are the actors. And God is the writer, producer, and director. The drama consists of numerous acts, all going on at the same time. The characters come and go. And all the while the audience is becoming enlightened into the character of God.
