Today’s Bible reading: Genesis 5-7; Matthew 3:7-17, 4:1-11; Psalms 3:1-8; Proverbs 1:10-19

In Chapter 5 of Genesis we see why marriage is between a man and a woman. God tells us that He created human beings to be like Him and He partitioned His characteristics between males and females. When a man and a woman marry they are uniting to form a sort of “symbol” of God on earth. By combining their individual characteristics they represent God to the rest of the world. A married couple is intended to bear witness to God by the way they interact with each other: in harmony and unison. And when they have children they are too treat those children just like God treats His creations: by giving of themselves sacrificially but with discipline and rebuke when necessary — always doing everything out of love. This will be a great witness to the world as to who God is and how much He loves each and every one of us.

In the story of Noah’s ark we see a foreshadowing of what is to come.Just as the ark was the only way to escape the flood, Jesus is the only way to escape hell. But sadly just like in the times of Noah, people are ignoring the means that God has provided. Certainly the ark was huge and Noah could not have built it in secret. I’m sure his neighbors and friends were wondering what he was doing, probably even laughing at him. Sounds like the unbelievers of today who laugh at those who are following Christ. I should know; I used to be one of those mockers.

I found it interesting that God closed the door of the ark (Genesis 7:16). If God closed it, then I would guess that only God could open it. If God has put Noah in charge of closing the door, he may have opened it when he heard his friends clamoring to get in once the rains came. God kept the door closed not because He hated those people. He was simply keeping His word. When time is up, it is up. And when God closed the door it was too late for anyone outside the ark to escape their fate.

In Matthew we see the right way to respond to Satan. Eve was over-matched by Satan in the Garden of Eden. But Jesus knew exactly what to do. He quoted Scripture (in His case, the Old Testament). That is why it is so important for us today to know God’s word. When temptations come along we have to know the truth. How well we know that truth will determine if we fall like Eve or rise like Jesus.

Proverbs teaches a great lesson today that corroborates this. It is not worth it to achieve or obtain by unscrupulous methods. What determines the legitimacy of our actions is not society. Just because society says is okay doesn’t mean that it is. Often times it is not. The determinate is God’s word and nothing else. This is another reason why it is important to know God by knowing the Bible.
